  1. Laurie, I'm glad that the birth and adoption went smoothly - what a wonderful gift she has given, even more wonderful when you realise the price she may have paid for that with her health. Do tell her that she's been lifted to the Lord in prayer.
  2. I was raised by Christian parents, who in turn were raised by Christians, in fact I have quite a heritage of Faith behind me - but none of that was any good until I trusted the Lord for myself. It made growing up much simpler and raising my childen likewise, as there are few conflicting influences throughout the family. Though as my parents were raised in an Independant Baptist Church, and moved into our present circles after I was born, we did notice that the other children around treated us slightly differently, but it has stood us in good stead as we know that there are many, many true Children of God who worship differently from us. It can make you lazy though, as a lot of Truth has simply been absorbed and not won for ourselves, that's a good thing about places like ChristianMom it can stretch my knowledge that wee bit further.
  3. Mark 14:38 Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. The spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak. 1Co 10:13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. I don't know if these will be of any help - they were the first that I came across. I've lost a bit of weight recently, but I haven't done anything specific. Simply cut back on the amounts I ate and switched to lower fat versions. That and running after a very active 3 year old seemed to be enough to get things moving. A little advice , get active with the wee one , long walks pushing the pram, running about with a ball etc at the park. If you find you eat things between meals just make sure that they aren't around for you to nibble at or use fruit instead .
  4. Lots of drinks are great for colds - no matter what age you are. 2 of mine seemed to be born with a cold [ i'd had a streaming nose before the births ] but although they snuffled and sneezed , by the time they were fully latched on they seemed to breath easily and fed well.
  5. southpaw I've one lefthanded child - he's 5 and has mastered the writing reasonably well so far. He was ambidextrious for a while he would draw a circle with one hand and colour it in with the other while the first hand was drawing the next circle - it was facinating to watch Although I write etc with my right hand I do several things better with my left or ,seemingly, backwards . A bow I tie by, making the loop in my left not the right, wich caused me great problems growing up. [it still does for pre-tied bows I can never get the tails the right lengths] I've just worked out the easiest method for me and stuck to it!

Glad to see you found us again. My husband is a Stephen [with a ph] too, one of my favourite names.
  7. my husband has just reminded me of one tradition I forgot about - DUMPS Each birthday you'd have to 'get your dumps' from everyone who realised it was your birthday. That is a dump [ thump ] on your back for each year of your life - plus one to grow on
  8. Scots Birthdays I've been racking my brains over this one and really can't think of anything that would be particulary Scottish as far as birthdays go. Of Course it could be that everything we do is, but I just think it's normal As a family it was a traditional that we had a Dumpling - a rich steamed fruit pudding type [ sometimes refered to as a clootie - but we did ours in a steamer pot not a cloth so it isn't a clootie as we don't use a cloot confused?] whether that is just a family thing, I don't know. One fact that may be more British is that, 21 is the 'big' age when you are an 'Adult' and get 'the key to the door' - though 18 is taking over more now. In Scotland though we can be married without parental consent at 16 - that's why runaways from England [ and irate parents] skipped over the border and were wed at Gretna Green. Scandinavians celebrate a big birthday at 25 years. I don't know if any of this is a help or not but what I will do, is post this on a Scottish message board that I'm a member of and see what the other 'experts' in this field can come up with.
  9. Thank-you Laurie, It has been a privilege to have watched God's hand in your life as he led you through the past couple of years. 2 Corinthians 12:9 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.
  10. 1 Corinthians 13:8 ¶ Love never ends; as for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. 13 and now there doth remain faith, hope, love—these three; and the greatest of these is love. 1 Corinthians 14:23 If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad? We had a similar discussion last year, I think the above verses sum up the result. If you use the SEARCH button on the top of the page you should find the whole thread - it will make interesting reading.
  11. But on the other hand , what would a Christian be doing in Hollywood in the first place ? The 'lifestyle' that brings 'celebrity status' has nothing much in common with biblical teaching. Philippians 2 sprang to mind - 3 Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. 4 Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. 5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: 7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: 8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. 9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: Just a few quick thoughts
  12. great minds! I had been thinking about this topic today and was just coming on to post Matthew 5:45 but I see Twin Crier has got there before me
  13. welcome Twistie and SavedbyGrace I'm wonka2 from Scotland - I seem to be the longest on here [ but I'm not the oldest ] I have 4 children a girl born in 93 then 3 little boys [ 98, 99, 01] and had 2 miscarriages between the eldest 2. I'm glad to see you have found us here - it can get pretty quiet at times but just speak up we'll hear you A Guid New Year to you when it comes !
  14. The baby needs to feed for a while on one side to get the hind-milk - the rich creamy milk [ I can't remember the timing but each mum/baby combination is different] the first milk is the nice, thin, thirst quenching variety My first child used to 'feed' for 30-50 mins but wasn't actually getting much but the 3 boys all fed well sometimes just on one, sometimes needing a short time on the other too, depending on how 'hungry or thirsty' they were. If Henry is on for 30 mins chances are he's not feeding but just nursing at the end, but then that's what breast feeding is all about not only providing them with nutrition but love, care and comfort too just Remember to use the other side next [ hard in the middle of the night I know ] but a smart baby will soon tell you if there isn't enough there for him.
  15. I'll just post my own 'wish list' : leather gloves , and a silver watch - I know I'll get these as I've tried on the gloves and am chosing the watch Apart from that I hope to get a book , CD or video and of course a big bar of chocolate to eat while I'm enjoying them We always enjoy getting something that DOESN'T remind us of the fact that we are mums ! PS I like the avatar
