How Christians Celebrate Valentine Day

Starting with

1. Stand up for the truths

Psalms 40:9 I have preached righteousness in the great congregation: lo, I have not refrained my lips, O LORD, thou knowest.

40:10 I have not hid thy righteousness within my heart; I have declared thy faithfulness and thy salvation: I have not concealed thy loving kindness and thy truth from the great congregation.

Romans 1:15 So, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to you that are at Rome also.

2. Die to our selves for the sake of other.

John 15:13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

1 John 3:16 Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.

3. Give our life to Jesus

Paul says this in Romans 6:1-23

1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?

2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? 3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? 4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: 6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. 7 For he that is dead is freed from sin. 8 Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him: 9 Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.

10 For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.
11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. 12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.
13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.
14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law,
but under grace.

15 What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.
.

4. Express Our love to one another:

Joh 13:34 - A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.

Romans 8:35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?

Ps. 63:3 Because thy lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise thee.

Turning the Ordinary into the Extraordinary

We had the treat of having Tony Perkins, of the Family Research Council, speak at our church this morning. I must admit, I'm not typically a note taker but my husband was home in bed so I took good notes for him and can share them here:

Title of Message: Turning the Ordinary into the Extraordinary

Scripture: John 2:1-10

"On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Now both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding. And when they ran out of wine, the mother of Jesus said to Him, “They have no wine.”

Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does your concern have to do with Me? My hour has not yet come.”

His mother said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it.”

Now there were set there six waterpots of stone, according to the manner of purification of the Jews, containing twenty or thirty gallons apiece. Jesus said to them, “Fill the waterpots with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. And He said to them, “Draw some out now, and take it to the master of the feast.” And they took it. When the master of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom. And he said to him, “Every man at the beginning sets out the good wine, and when the guests have well drunk, then the inferior. You have kept the good wine until now!”

Jesus' first miracle of public ministry was performed at a wedding - marriage is the illustration of Christ's relationship to the church - started where His Father started, with marriage, with Adam and Eve at creation.

Our culture is saying that throwing off "the shackles of marriage" is a good thing: not true.

We need to be striving each day to make our marriages better - we need to make it more reflective of the relationship between Christ and the church.

The six pots of ceremonial water represented the law - the newly created wine represented life.

1. Your relationship with your spouse refects your relationship with Christ.

- We are so focused in pointing out the faults in our spouse that we neglect to see the problems with ourselves.

- A turning point in their (Tony's) marriage was submitting himself to the Lord.

- You can tell where someone's relationship with the Lord is based on how they speak of their spouse.

- Christ laid down everything for us.

Ephesians 5:22-33

"Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body. Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything.

Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish. So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself. For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord does the church. For we are members of His body, of His flesh and of His bones. “For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church. Nevertheless let each one of you in particular so love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.

2. Your relationship with your spouse is critical to your Christian walk.

- God puts great emphasis on how you treat your spouse - mistreament will interfere with our prayers.

a. have a policy of complete honesty

b. keep lines of communication open (important: apologize, ask for forgiveness)

c. overlook minor faults - don't demand perfection in others when you can't deliver it yourself

d. strive for unity in finances

e. love is a commandment, not an uncontrollable emotion

f. communicate love - even if you don't feel like it

g. don't be afraid to ask for help

1 Peter 3:7

"Husbands, likewise, dwell with them with understanding, giving honor to the wife, as to the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life, that your prayers may not be hindered."

3. Your relationship with your spouse should speak life to the world.

- More than anything else you do, your marriage will make an impact.

Matthew 5:13-16

“You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.

“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven."

Two things stood out in my mind while hearing this sermon:

#1 - I really need to commit and act on my commitment of praying for my husband every single day.

#2 - I was reminded of a thought I had recently. We have been blessed in our marriage and sometimes this causes me to act as if we "have arrived" and can now just happily coast... but, we're 31 and 33 - if God wills, we have a whole lot more marriage ahead of us than we have behind us and a mere nine years investment isn't going to keep us fueled to go another forty years. Our personalities are such that we never really did a "courting" stage, with romantic stuff... but we're thinking these days that it might be important to try and work some of that fluffy affection stuff in in order to honor this relationship as something different than any other we're involved in. We want to make it something special.

This morning we had a guest speaker. He was pneominal. He was just exactly what I and I am sure many others of the congregation needed. His whole sermon was on..... DONT give up! Dont give up when God asks you to do something that seems too hard. Don't give up on the congregation or the pastor when times are tough. Dont give up on Jesus, because your christian faith didnt turn out to be what you expected of it. Dont give up when your finances are low, trust in Jesus to provide. Do not grow weary in doing God. But recieve your strength from God. And wait upon the lord and renew your strength. I felt myself in tears because my husband and I asked the Lord for clarity this morning on what to do reguarding his tough situation at work, the chruch and so many many areas of life right now.

That word felt like a message straight from God! EXACTLY what we needed to hear."DONT GIVE UP!"

Title: What the Bible Says About Today

Scripture: 2 Peter 1:19

"And we have the word of the prophets made more certain, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts
."

Description: It is true that no man knows the day or the hour of Christ's return, but we were instructed to watch the signs and always be ready - the Bible is full of prophecy about what will occur in the last days and we are getting to see much of it unfolding right now.

There were ten main points:

1. A growing ignorance of Bible prophecy

2 Timothy 4:2-4

"
Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction. For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.
"

1 Thess. 4:13

"
Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope
."

Matthew 24:36-39

"
No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man
."

2. Increasing gobal warning signs

Matthew 24:1-12

"
Jesus left the temple and was walking away when his disciples came up to him to call his attention to its buildings. "Do you see all these things?" he asked. "I tell you the truth, not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down."

As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately. "Tell us," they said, "when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?"

Jesus answered: "Watch out that no one deceives you. For many will come in my name, claiming, 'I am the Christ,' and will deceive many. You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains.

"Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me. At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold..."

3. A Happy Birthday to the State of Israel - The modern Israel was born in a day: May 14, 1948 - May 14, 2008

Isaiah 66:8

"
Who has ever heard of such a thing?

Who has ever seen such things?

Can a country be born in a day

or a nation be brought forth in a moment?

Yet no sooner is Zion in labor

than she gives birth to her children
."

4. Increase in cults, false prophets, and Messiahs - watch your news with Bible in hand. The false distracts from the real and is like calling wolf again and again, causing people to disbelieve when the truth calls out.

5. Emerging one world belief system

Judges 21:25

"In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as he saw fit."

Matthew 7:13

"Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it."

6. Implementation of a global financial network

7. An increase of violent activity worldwide

Luke 21:26

"Men will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken."

8. Signs in the sky - supposed UFO sightings

Luke 21:25a

"There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars."

9. Signs on the earth - natural disasters escalating

Luke 21:25b

"
On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea
."

10. A departure from faith and reason

Isaiah 5:20

"Woe to those who call evil good

and good evil,

who put darkness for light

and light for darkness,

who put bitter for sweet

and sweet for bitter."

Romans 1:18-32

"
The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.

For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles.

Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.

Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.

Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done. They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; they are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless. Although they know God's righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them."

But there is HOPE:

Matthew 5:11-15

"
Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

"You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men.

"You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.

Luke 21:28

"
When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near
."

Luke 21:34-36

"
Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with dissipation, drunkenness and the anxieties of life, and that day will close on you unexpectedly like a trap. For it will come upon all those who live on the face of the whole earth. Be always on the watch, and pray that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man.
"

How did it touch you:

It touched me because I have been growing aware of these very things and wondering to myself if I was being paranoid. I was believing lies - I should have been trusting what my Bible told me. It's right there in black and white. Yes, we don't know the day or the hour but Jesus told us we would recognize the signs and he gave us the signs to watch for.

How can I apply it in the week to come:

Be faithful! The reminder about Noah preaching for 120 years as he built the ark but yet no one came onto the ark except his family. We are called to be faithful - God will take care of the results. I have been weighed down by lack of response but I am encouraged by Noah's example - I doubt God will ask me to keep going 120 years. I can do all things through Him who strengthens me - even share the message of Christ over and over again when my efforts are met with deafening silence.

We had a guest speaker, Charlie Campbell, who spoke on the emerging church. His website is http://www.alwaysbeready.com.

Title: The Emerging Church

Scriptures: 2 Peter 2:1 "But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them—bringing swift destruction on themselves."

Description:

He started off by saying that we wanted to leave church that day -

1. Innoculated - recognizing false teachings

2. Strengthened - armed with truth

3. Equipped - ready to give an answer to all who ask about the hope we have in Christ

1. What is the Emerging Church?

- people wanting to reinvent Christianty to make it more appealing to our post-modern culture

* Modernism - truth exists and it can be known by reason and science

* Post-modernism - truth cannot be known with any degree of certainty

- the emerging church says we have to change our message about Jesus in light of the post-modern belief that truth cannot be known, including truth about the Bible, about Jesus, about God

2. Who are it's leaders?

These are the people who are the main speakers at the conferences, who author the best selling books, and who are the emerging church's spokesmen in the media: Brian McLaren, Rob Bell, Doug Pagitt, Tony Jones, Spencer Burke

3. What areas are we concerned about?

- the emerging church claims that "the message of the gospel changes" and thus is insists on changing theology

But the Bible says:

"Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming." - Ephesians 4:14 - the Bible equips us so that we will not change teachings with the wind

"We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us." - 2 Corinthians 5:20 - as ambassadors, we are charged with relaying what we have been told by Christ, not spreading a message of our own liking

"...teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you." - Matthew 28:20 - we are to proclaim Christ's teachings, not edit them.

"Dear friends, although I was very eager to write to you about the salvation we share, I felt I had to write and urge you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to the saints." - Jude 3 - faith was delivered once for all.

"I the LORD do not change." - Malachi 3:6

"Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever." - Hebrews 13:8

"Your word, O LORD, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens." - Psalm 119:89

- the emerging church claims that the scripture is not clear and cannot be understood with any real degree of certainty because it is too mysterious

But the Bible says:

"Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth." - 2 Timothy 2:15 - there is a correct way to handle the word and the word is true

"The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul. The statutes of the LORD are trustworthy, making wise the simple. The precepts of the LORD are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the LORD are radiant, giving light to the eyes. The fear of the LORD is pure, enduring forever. The ordinances of the LORD are sure and altogether righteous. They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the comb." - Psalm 19:7-10

The speaker pointed out that many people complain about the Bible being difficult to understand because they ocassionally and randomly flip it open to a spot, read one paragraph, and then walk away puzzled. He told us about how he is reading the Little House on the Prarie series to his children at night and joked that if her were to randomly flip open to a page each night and then read only one page, his children would ask why the book was so confusing.

"Some Pharisees came to him to test him. They asked, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any and every reason?" - "Haven't you read," he replied, "that at the beginning the Creator 'made them male and female,..." - Matthew 19:3-4 - Jesus expected them to have read and to have understood.

God's word was plain - "but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die." (Genesis 2:17) but the serpent deceived Eve regarding God's clarity - " Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, "Did God really say, 'You must not eat from any tree in the garden'?" (Genesis 3:1)

- the emerging church says that the inerrancy of the Bible is not important - that even if some things aren't true, faith is all that matters. One of the church's leaders, (I forgot which one) wrote in a book that even if God had a human father named Larry and that if the virgin birth were just myth, it wouldn't change a thing. But that would mean that Jesus were fully human... and that would mean that we would no longer have a sinless sacrifice offered on our behalf.

Instead, if the Bible can't be trusted, there is no reason to believe any of it.

"Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth." - John 17:17

Jesus spoke of Jonah in the belly of the whale and of Noah and the flood as truth, not as myth.

"...and the Scripture cannot be broken" - John 10:35

"I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished." - Matthew 5:18

- the emerging church states "the message of the gospel changes" and they say that none of us have figured it out.

But the Bible says:

"Now, brothers, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain. For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Peter, and then to the Twelve." - 1 Corinthians 15:1-5

"But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be eternally condemned!" - Galatians 1:8

- the emerging church does not teach of coming judgment or hell - the teach universalism... the idea that everyone goes to heaven

But the Bible says:

"Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it." - Matthew 7:13-14

- the emerging church teaches that homosexual behavior is not sinful (a note from me - homosexual behavior is no more sinful than any other sin... but it's one of the only sins right now being advertised as not sinful))

But the Bible says:

"Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman; that is detestable." - Leviticus 18:22

"Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion." - Romans 1:26-27

"Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God." - 1 Corinthians 6:9-10

- the emerging church implements unbiblical spiritual practices

* the use of icons, a representation of a sacred personage. The emerging church teaches about meditating on icons, listening to them, praying through them.

But the Bible says:

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God." - Philippians 4:6

"This, then, is how you should pray: " 'Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,..." - Matthew 6:9

*the use of yoga, not as a physical exercise, but as a spiritual practice of allowing energy to flow

* discursive meditation - a leader guides a group through a series of images (an example from one of their books dealt with picturing Jesus, talking to Him, Him taking something from your hand, etc.... but this would mean that you are meditating on an Jesus made up in your own imagination, putting words into His mouth) - discursive meditation is totally foreign to the Bible

How did it touch You: I had gone into church feeling rather oppressed by the corruption of the world around us. I left feeling encouraged that it was not all in my imagination.

How can I appy it in the week to come:

Also from the message - What are we to do?

1. Renew our commitment to knowing the word of God - get in the word. Study it. Meditate on the word.

2. Stay away from this movement - don't read the books or attend conferences hoping to gleam something useful.

"I urge you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Keep away from them." - Romans 16:17

3. Look for opportunities to speak to other believers about the emerging church.

Funny, you should do this this week. Yesterday my husbands sermon was on witnessing. I love how everything comes together like this and keeps repeating itself to me.

Father God I pray for Carla that you would give her wisdom and guidance in all things. I pray that where ever Carla goes that she will be blessed. Father God I pray that you give Carla wisdom and understanding to know how to raise her children to walk with you and serve you all the days of her life. Father God I pray in the name of Jesus that you would help Carla to not give into the devils attacks but to continue to speak God s word over every bad situation that comes her way. Father God I pray that she will be known of your victory. That she overcomes by the blood of the lamb and the word of her testimony. Father God I pray that she will be known of she is more than a conquerer through Christ Jesus who loves her. That she can do all things through Christ Jesus who gives her strength. That nothing is impossible with God. That if thou canst believe all things are possible to him who believe. Mark 9:23 Father God I thank you for Carla of what a blessing this web site is for christian moms. Father God I pray that you surround her with your love, your peace and guidance. Father God I give you all the glory for answering this prayer. In Jesus name I pray amen.

The spiritual life includes both Love and Sacrifice

To love God is the end of the spiritual life

But love of God and sacrifice cannot be separated

We must avoid 2 extremes: talking about love but not sacrifice, or talking about sacrifice & rules but overlook love.
