How do you handle social media with your kids?

Recommended Posts

I just replied to a post in the discussion forum that was from back in September, however it got me thinking, social media keeps changing, and what are we doing to keep up? Would love to hear how you control it, have you found any tools or good articles to guide your preteens/teens/college age kids?

I'm one of those tech savvy Mom's, and my kids are pretty open with me about all that goes on in different areas of social media (sometimes I know they share with their Dad and I because they are shocked too). However, the most alarming thing is a trend that I think will continue and grow. Facebook was the new and fun thing a few years ago. Now it's no longer the cool place to be. Sure, kids have a page, but they know their parents do too. So, where would you want to hang out, with your parents, or where your friends are? They will continue to move to other forms of social media according to what's accepted (cool) and most used by their peers.

I think there is a "loyalty level" to according to what they were first introduced to, and what's available now. I have a child who turns 13 on Friday - who could care less if she "gets a FB page". She's happy on Instagram and Mom and Dad didn't make her wait until she was 13 or any age to get it. I have a 15 year old who uses Instagram and Twitter. Both much more 'smartphone' friendly than Facebook. And a son who is a senior, who kind of uses Instagram and Twitter a little, but mainly texts and snap chats throughout his day and reads all his news, tech stuff on his phone.

If some of these things are social media sites you are unfamiliar with, stay tuned and I will be posting some guides so we will all know what we are doing and what to look for!
